Mon Apr 3rd 2006 21:04:19: A Weekend in Munich

So last weekend I went off to explorer Munich. I started off by driving to Dachau on Friday evening and having a wander around the town before it got dark. To be honest, I'd never throught about there being a town at Dachau, however there is and it's quite nice. As I was ariving I saw signs indicating there was a castle in the town, but as I was "wandering" I could not see it. Then I realised it wasn't exactly a castle... more of a country house.

Dachau Schloss... Guys, that really isn't a castle... that's a posh house

It did however have a fantastic view across to Munich and the alps.

Anyway on Saturday morning I went to see the Concentration Camp memorial site. The administration block and the entry gate is still there. The Admin block now houses a big museum detailing every part of what went on there. There was also a very sad film about the site. The cinema was big and full of Americans, however it was absolutely silent throughout.

The Administration block at Dachau Concentration CampWhen this camp was active, there this road was lined with buildings, each housing 100's (and at the end of the war, 1000's) of people

The Crematorium is still there as well, complete with fixtures, fittings and "showers". Apparently these particular showers were never used on a large scale

You can probably work out what this is. Apparently never used, and no one knows why.

Anyway Saturday afternoon I headed into Munich and went for a wander around the city. It was absolutely packed with both shoppers and tourist!

Munich City Centre

One of the towers of The Munich Dom is open to the public so I decided to go up and see what the view was like. The climb up started off on some really narrow spiral stairs which promised to be quite fun. However then I came out into a room to find the queue for the lift. Somehow I don't think that was original!

I then walked on around Munich, visiting the Englischer Garten and the Market on the way. The market was mad - huge beer gardens, loads of market stalls selling everything and people everywhere. The Englischer Garten on the other hand was just like Hyde Park - people sitting around reading enjoying the nice warm weather.

Der Englischer Garten: Very much like Hyde Park, but with a different sky line

On Sunday I went to visit the Deutsches Museum which is a big science museum. Worth a visit, however you can easily spend two full days there if you want to see it all.

Today I've spent the day at work, however my legs don't work (after walking too far) and I've got a cold. If I were in England I would have considered having the day off sick (for the first time ever) however I don't feel I can get away with that seeing as I'm working at the client's place :-(

There's a BMW museum, an electronics museum, and a toy museum in Munich, but I don't remember any of them really being worth visiting unless you were pretty bored. I was 14 at the time though...

Sadly the BMW museum is closed for refurbishment this year. Otherwise I would have paid it a visit.
